Impetus work closely with Luke and Benji, two freediving instructors based in Gozo. Together they run a small, community based freediving and spearfishing center.
Freediving is more of a calling than a sport, and Gozo Freedivers wishes to transmit the spirit of Freediving.Whether you’ve never held your breath underwater or you’re chasing your next certification, they will meet you exactly where you are. They offer both RAID and Molchanovs pathways, from a half-day Discover Freediving taster right through to advanced 30m training, taking students to various spots around the island of Gozo, with trips out to Comino’s clear water and the wrecks at Cirkewwa.
Spearfishing is the other side of what they do. Luke’s been doing it since he was five years old, handed his first spear sling by his dad, and he teaches it the same way he learned it — patience first, technique second, ego never. It’s a natural next step for divers who already feel at home underwater, and a genuinely sustainable way to eat: selective, respectful, no bycatch, just you and the fish you choose to take home for dinner.
Luke’s been teaching in these waters for well over a decade and still serves as president of the Malta Freediving Club, which he co-founded back in 2010. Benji started out as Luke’s student around 2020, fell hard for the sport, eventually left his day job to become an instructor himself, and now teaches alongside Luke. So while the Gozo Freedivers name is new, the experience behind it isn’t.
